Recognition-Victorian Government’s Community Sport & Recreation Awards
The Victorian Government’s Community Sport & Recreation Awards were held at the MCG on November 9.
These awards recognize the valuable contribution and hard work of clubs, coaches, officials and volunteers of allsports in Victoria. One of the 8 categories being presented was an award for ‘Service to Sport and Recreation’. One of the nominees for this award went to a gentleman named Don Cheyne, who has worked with and has been a life member of the Eastern Suburbs and Churches Table tennis Association for 60 years. Don has voluntarily run Monday night recreational table tennis sessions for about 45 years in his club. He raised funds along the way to buy tables, equipment and provide venue hire to reduce the costs for the club’s members. He is also an experienced coach who coached at all levels within the club. He also ran the A1 grade competition for the last 20 years. His late wife Pat, was also a valued member of the club, who alongside Don at all times, helped with supper arrangements, equipment set up and general maintenance of the club. Don is a great example of a passionate volunteer of our sport, and if we had more people like Don, our sport will experience stronger growth and higher participation across the board. Table tennis Victoria congratulates Don, his family and his club for his wonderful contribution to table tennis.
